Rum is made by fermenting and then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. The distillate, a clear liquid, is usually aged in oak barrels. It’s produced in nearly every sugar-producing region of the world, such as the Philippines, where Tanduay is the largest producer globally.

Is overproof rum strong? The term “overproof” comes from 18th-century British sailors who tested if rum was strong enough by pouring it on gunpowder; if it still ignited, it was considered “proof” strength, and anything higher was “overproof”
